A strangely satisfying thing that I discovered today is that the speed of light is much better approximated with feet rather than meters.
It’s about 1B (983,571,056) feet per second compared to 0.3B (299,792,458) meters per second.
Put another way, if we had 1B humans standing heel to toe, a beam of light would take 1s to pass through them. And 1s is so close to one heartbeat that we can say that light passes through 1B people in a heartbeat.
It’s a missed opportunity that something so fundamental can be expressed in such a beautiful way but I only found out by using a calculator out of curiosity.
Note: Even though we think of meters as a better standard, it’s actually arbitrary as it’s based off the circumference of Earth which is not really any kind of standard in the Universe.
