Why social media gives us fascism

Freedom of Press was seen as crucial to a democracy because a free press ensures all opinions are heard. In mediums of the past, if you wanted to broadcast you’d have to “shout” and everyone would hear. In the last 10 years, however, new technology has enabled that your shout only reaches the people who you choose. So we are still hearing these shouts, but they are no longer in a common space. We are literally tuned into entirely different narratives of the same reality we all inhabit.

The problem is, only one type of government wins when that happens. And our rules of governing haven’t adapted to this change yet and is unable to even out the playing field.

Hate and fear is rewarded in this new model of communication and discourse. Fascism is what it gives us.
